John H. Deer, Sr.
July 16, 2019
John H. Deer, Sr., 96, passed away on July 16, 2019. He was born in rural Runnells on August 4, 1922 the son of William and Emma (Ruth Hayes) Deer. He was the eldest of two sons.
John had many projects throughout his life. He was a farmer, milked cows, and worked at Farmer’s Supply, John Deere Implement in Colfax. In his free time, he loved to tinker…on anything; wood working, lawn mowers and loved having a food stand at the Iowa State Fair. After retiring from his beefburger business at the fair, he used the stand to serve lunch at farm auctions. John was also an information volunteer at the fair and loved to talk to people and play practical jokes.
He had eyes that would captivate you wondering what he was planning next and a smile that would light up a room making it warm and inviting.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Sharon (Jim) Motis; three granddaughters, Jennifer (Kyle) Morrison, Angie (Jason) Rosenbalm, and Amber (Darren) Battershell; as well as four great-grandsons, Wyatt Rosenbalm, Jake and Luke Battershell, and Nick Morrison.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Betty; and son, John, Jr.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 – 11:00 am on Monday, July 22, 2019 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona with a funeral service starting at 11:00 am. Reunification with his beautiful bride will follow immediately at Lowman Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Kindred Hospice and the Runnells Fire Department.

Shari: I am so sorry about the loss of your Daddy. I just shared with Dad about his passing. Dad always considered John one of his dearest friends. I have sweet memories of your Dad and Mom. I am so sorry Kent and I could not attend his service as Kent just had knee replacement surgery. We would like to send a donation to the fire dept. on behalf of Dad. To whom should we send it? Big Hug from all of the Murrow fam...XO

So sorry for your loss. I worked at John from 1989 to 1996. John made you smile even if you were having a bad day. I recall many farmers that would stop in just to visit with the partsmen even when they really didn't need nothing more than an extra bolt or 2. Guys like John were a real treasure to know. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all of you.

Shari and Jen - So sorry for your loss. What a great man ! I cherish all the years we worked together ! He was such a ornery SOB. ha We had so many good times together, and he taught me a lot about life, work, and a lot of practical jokes. I was on the receiving end of many of those, but i turned a few on him to.
It was my priviledge to have worked with him all those years.

Pardon the pun but John was endearing.
I was convalescing at the Norwalk Care Center for a few days following open-heart surgery. It seemed like John's mind was searching as he ate his meals and wheeled himself down the hallway. We visited one day. He told me that he had farmed and about winning the baby contest. I had an Iowa Barn Foundation magazine in my tote. We poured over the pictures. He seemed to connect. He had a sparkle. He touched my heart. I regret I never got to know him before his health failed. My condolences for your loss.

I had the privilege of working as a fair volunteer with John. He always had a story for fairgoers. He was enthusiastic and people caught his enthusiasm.
