Harold “Ed” Hinrichs, 73, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Altoona Christian Church with burial at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines..
Ed was born July 25, 1935 to William and Ruth Hinrichs in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1954, where he was on the football squad. He entered the US Marine Corps shortly after graduation. In 1958 he married Shirley (McDougal) and they lived in Altoona for most of their 51 years of marriage. Ed was a truck driver for Bruce Motor freight and Churchill Truckline until he had a stroke in 1993. They operated a square dance apparel store for 9 years and sponsored many square dance bus trips to National Conventions and also fun Mystery trips that everyone enjoyed.
Ed is survived by his wife, Shirley Hinrichs; His 3 sons, Steven of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mike (friend Sherri) of Altoona, Jeff (Ellen) of Zearing, Iowa; foster son, Tim of Des Moines; And 6 grandsons, Matthew, Andrew, Kain, Justin, Joe and Jacob.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, mother (who died after his birth), brother, Jack and step-mother, Pearl (Ware) Hinrichs.
He leaves behind many friends and relatives.
