Shayla Gilbert

Shayla Rae Gilbert, age 35, was called home to heaven on February 16, 2009. A memorial service will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St., in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 3, at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Shayla was born in Jefferson, Iowa, on February 14, 1974. She attended grade school in Jefferson and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1992. She attended Des Moines Area Community College and formerly worked for Principal Financial Group before moving to Newton.
Shayla was the 19th kidney transplant recipient at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines in 1988. She had recently been on kidney dialysis.
She enjoyed spending her time with family and friends and spending time alone going for drives. Her greatest joys were her younger sister and two young nieces.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Joan Steinke, in 1986. She leaves behind her mother, Laura Steinke-Simms of Altoona; her father and step-mom, Steve and Mary Jane Venteicher of Panora; her brother Joel (Tasha) Venteicher of Ankeny; her sister Joanie Steinke-Simms of Altoona; her grandparents Arnold Steinke of Jefferson and Jerry and Eunice Venteicher of Scranton; nieces Courtney and Cassidy Venteicher of Ankeny; great-grandmother Anna McMillan of Concord, NH; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss her very much.
Any memorial contributions received by Shayla’s mother will be given to the Iowa Donor Network. *DON’T TAKE YOUR ORGANS TO HEAVEN – HEAVEN KNOWS WE NEED THEM HERE*

I just heard the sad news from Donna. I'm am so sorry, me heart goes out to you girl. I know how much all of your children meant to you. You are in my prayers.
I know we've lost touch, but I do think of you. Donna and I talk about how things were..... there were some good times. Here's my email humtingp@shaw.ca, email me anytime. I'm now married and living in Calgary, Canada.

I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. I just heard the news a couple hours ago and my heart is very heavy. We have lost touch since we both left Cahaba. I have seen Joannie a few times in Altoona. I just want you to know that I am here for you. I will be at the the funeral home and will keep in touch. I miss you so much.
