Service Details

Gunnar Robert Hayes passed from this life on Friday, January 12, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center from heart disease. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Gunnar was born to Joseph and Josephine Hayes on January 23, 1919 in Carney, IA. On June 26, 1943 he married his sweetheart, Virginia Stafford in St. Augustine, FL. Gunnar served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1947. Upon his return to Des Moines from the service, he began employment with Beatrice Foods. He retired in 1974 and in 1975 started employment with the State of Iowa in the Department of Veterans Affairs. He retired in 1985.
Gunnar is survived by his sister, Lela (Jim) Sellers of Des Moines; his three loving daughters, Linda (Jim) Baker of Des Moines, Nancy (Fred) Anderson and Debbie (Mark) Weeks both of Altoona; grandchildren Rebecca (David) Largent, Pamela (Randy) Ball, Amy (Jeff) Ayers, Brad (Cass) Edwards, Brent (fiancée, Dawn Hendricks) Edwards, Jennifer (Brandon) Emerson all of the Des Moines area and Michael Weeks of Iowa City; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Gunnar was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Hayes; his beloved wife, Virginia; sister, Helen Hayes and brother, Russell Hayes.
Gunnar was the pillar to his family and loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed – especially by his “three angels”.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Rising Sun Church of Christ.
