Ruth Ann Maxwell passed away on February 8 at Valley View Village in Des Moines, IA at the age of 61 years, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Ruth, born August 20, 1947 in Iowa City, IA to parents Gladys (Recoy) and Walter Weeber, spent her early years in Thayer and Creston, IA.
Ruth married Larry Hartley and to this union a son, Danny Ray Hartley was born. They divorced and Ruth married Perry Maxwell in 1967. A daughter, Julie Ann (Maxwell) Jones blessed this union.
Ruth proudly earned her GED from DMACC in Des Moines in 1984. She furthered her education in the field of nursing at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines and the Ft. Dodge Community College. She followed her chosen career for many years in hospitals and care centers caring for others until she became disabled in 1996.
Ruth’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Her hobbies included doing puzzles and various crafts. Her specialties include a variety of different drawings and paintings.
Preceding Ruth in death were her parents; her husband Perry; and her sister, Donna Gerrard. Left to cherish Ruth’s memory are: her daughter, Julie; son Dan; step-daughters Denise (Maxwell) Bruce, and Margaret (Maxwell) Hutchinson; grandchildren: Emerald and Albert Jones, Morgan, Daniel (Shawna), Kelsey, and Caitlyn Hartley; great-grandchildren Trevor and Angelina; her brother John (Linda) Weeber of Lenox and Chester Weeber of Galesburg, IL; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, caregivers, and friends from the Bahá’i religion.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway on Tuesday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. After cremation, burial will follow at a later date in the family plot in Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Memorials may be made to the family.
