Eugene Neal

Eugene D. Neal, 82, passed away of emphysema January 30, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.
Gene was born March 11, 1926 in Des Moines to Clifton D. Neal and Nina Hawkins Neal. Survivors include a half sister, Donna (Littlejohn) Schwarndt Harms and a half brother, Irwin (Littlejohn) Schwandt along with several nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, an older half brother Ellis Zimmerman, a sister Edna Neal, two half brothers, Jack and Jerry Littlejohn and half sister Dorothy Littlejohn.
Ellen Celsi, was his payee since 1989 and legal guardian since 2003.
Gene lived in Des Moines his entire life and for the past 20 years on Hartford Ave. He worked at numerous jobs in the downtown area before retiring on disability. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Iowa National Guard.
Being known for his friendly smile and positive view on life, Gene was proud of the fact that he was born at home and at the age of 82, had never been hospitalized. He enjoyed watching television, going to B and B and the HyVee grocery stores and visiting his friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
