Ethel Smith

Ethel Kathryn Cummings Smith, 90, died peacefully January 28, 2009 at Valley View Village in Des Moines. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Sunset Cemetery in Des Moines.
Ethel was born April 25, 1918 in Martinsville, Missouri to Beatrice and Edward Cummings. She spent most of her childhood in Gilman City, Missouri. She married LeRoy Smith in 1935, and they moved to Des Moines in 1936. She worked for Van Ginkels and Sons for 15 years, as well as Iowa State Bank for 30 years. She was a faithful member of Indianola Heights Evangelical Free Church for over forty years. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, yard work, gardening, and taking bus trips with her friends.
Ethel is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Daryl and Joy Cummings; and her sister-in-law Jo Cummings; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 14 great –great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy Smith; her son, Denver Smith; her daughter Barbara Smith Holmes; son-in-law, Dorrell Holmes; a twin baby; her brothers, Roy, Ray, and Franklin Cummings; her sisters Jessie Pickney and Leola Misner; and her grandson, Rick Smith.
Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Indianola Heights Evangelical Free Church.
