Service Details

Thomas A. Ballard, 75, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Mercy Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Thomas was born May 12, 1933 to George and Violet Ballard in Des Moines. He graduated from Lincoln High School and served in US Army during the Korean War. Thomas was a member of Park Avenue Christian Church, the Masons and was a Shriner. He also served as Union Steward for the IBEW #499. He retired from MidAmerican Energy after 47 years of service and worked for Keck Airport Parking during his retirement.
Thomas was an avid sports fan, especially watching the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed all car racing.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ginger Ballard; daughters, Debra (Steve) Wathne, Bettelou (Richard) Holland, Tommalynn Whitmore, Marjorie Stepp, and Dawn (Roger) Lanman; 14 grandchildren; 21 Great-Grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Beals; brother, Ronald (Debbie) Ballard; cat, Sid; dog, GiGi; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Violet Ballard; granddaughter, Tammy Whitmore; sister, Mary Jane; and son-in-law, Michael Whitmore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family.
