Kurt H. Masteller
May 28, 2019
Kurt Harvey Masteller was born May 7, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri to Patrick Edward Masteller and Cora Kathryn (Carr) Masteller. He was raised in Gladstone, Missouri with his two sisters, Lisa and Lori. He attended Meadow Brook Elementary School, Antioch Junior High School, and Oak Park High School. At the end of high school, he moved to Florida. He was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 18. He survived years of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Florida always held a special place in his heart and he loved telling his family about his memories from there. Kurt trained and became a registered diagnostic medical sonographer. He moved to Iowa and had a thriving career in medical sales. He was a mentor to many. A lifelong learner, he earned his bachelor’s degree later in life.
Kurt loved his three children, Allison Marie Masteller, Daniel Patrick Masteller and Amy Elizabeth Masteller. They were his pride and his joy. He was a very loving father and loved being with his kids. He enjoyed walks to Easter Lake, or the “Great Valley” as he called it. He enjoyed cooking and loved to grill. He made the best burgers! Some of his favorite past-times were playing long games of Uno, Mario Kart, and golfing. He was proud of his involvement with the Boy Scouts. Kurt loved to drive and enjoyed teaching his son, Dan, how to drive as well. He was a high energy person, always with a positive attitude, and simply loved life.
He passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at his home in Des Moines from heart failure due to his cancer treatments as a young man. He was 57 years old.
He is survived by his children, Allison, Daniel and Amy Masteller; parents, Patrick Masteller and Cora Jones; sisters, Lisa Masteller Martel and Lori Barnett; step-brother, Eric Jones; nephews, Phillip Edward Martel, Andrew Lawrence Martel, Matthew William Martel, Benjamin Allen Barnett and Timothy Wayne Barnett; three aunts, two uncles and eleven cousins.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Dave Jones.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines.

I worked with Kurt as a Hewlett-Packard colleague and was his mentor when he supported Pete Lynch in the Desmoines, Iowa geography. Kurt had great passion for his work in Echocardiography and was very much an expert in his field and went on to do many other areas of expertise. I will always remember his answer to my question when I would ask him how he was doing. " Bill, I am living the dream" with a huge grin on his face This was his reply even when things were rapidly going not so well. Very positive guy . He loved to talk about his family in the evenings at dinner and we shared many evenings enjoying a craft beer and having a few laughs over our days work and experiences. I wish we could have stayed in closer contact after we followed separate paths in life.

I had the pleasure of working with Kurt at GE. He always went out of his way to help me, often calling me and offering his assistance, and he was a great listener. He was truly one of a kind and I loved his unique sense of humor. He spoke of his children often and his love for family was obvious. My heartfelt condolences go to the entire Masteller family. He will be missed.

I remember the times we had as kids. They were great times. Biking, hiking, Boy Scouts, crossing long pipes without loosing balance. Your stories and laughter. You rocking in your chair as you listened to your albums. The endless games of shooting pool and ping pong. The football passes together. And the goodnight prayer we said together befor going to sleep ..... Now I lay me down to sleep.... if I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take...
I know your in Heaven Kurt.
I love you, Mike
