Tieng Nguyen, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 27, 2019.

Tieng was born December 26, 1929. He attended elementary school in Ben Tre, Vietnam and high school in My Tho, Vietnam. After graduating from high school, he began teaching in Ben Tre for five years. He went back to school to become a military officer in Thu Duc. After achieving his status as a military officer, he worked in Quan Trung and Thu Duc schools. Tieng was placed into a concentration camp when South Vietnam was lost to the communists. He was transferred to North Vietnam for eight years, before being released from the camp in 1995. He immigrated to America through the HO program as a refugee on March 24, 1995.

Tieng is survived by his family in the U.S.: sons - Nguyen Ngoc Phuong (Chi), Nguyen Ngoc Sang (Jennifer), Nguyen Ngoc Dung; daughter – Nguyen Ngoc Ngan (Sang); eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his family in Vietnam: sons – Nguyen Ngoc Phuoc and wife, Nguyen Ngoc Hong (Nao), Nguyen Ngoc Son (Thu); daughters – Nguyen Thi Yen, Nguyen Thi Ha, Nguyen Thi Nga (Lam) Nguyen Thi Tuyet (Huyen); 21 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nguyen Thi Kim Loan and younger brother Nguyen Ngoc Minh.

Services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Cremation will follow.
