Service Details

Tom E. Ashley, 86, passed away on May 21, 2019 at The Bridges in Ankeny. He was born March 8, 1933 in Michigan to Benjamin and Agnes (Allison) Ashley.

He is survived by his children, Victoria (Vince) McCabe, Allison (Tim Metz) Jarrett, Amy (Fred) Panici and Thomas (Kathy Doll) Ashley; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sharon (Norm) Dak.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Annette; and siblings Jackie and George.

Tom was passionate about his family and had a heart that radiated love and warmth through all the lives he touched. He was a very dedicated and caring father, grandfather, great grandfather (GG), uncle, and brother. He spent many hours cheering on his family at soccer, hockey, baseball, dance recitals, and gymnastic meets. He was a devoted Cubs fan. His family is reminiscing about all the memories they have playing cards & dice games with Tom, learning to fish from him, enjoying an Oreo with him or meeting him at the horse races.

Tom was a long time resident of West Chicago, IL--although he spent a great deal of time in Hoffman, MN where he chose to locate his company: Hoffman Aseptic Packaging. Tom retired to Ankeny, IA in 2004. He and Annette loved to travel and found joy spending time at the family cottage in Delton, MI or taking RV trips with their best friends Walt and Blanche.

Tom will be remembered as being a friendly, compassionate man who was loved by all that were lucky enough to meet him. He was known for the impression he made on people--no matter how long he knew you, he somehow always made you feel like you were part of the family.

Towards the end of Tom’s life, he suffered from dementia. And while it may have stripped him of remembering what a great life he led--those who love him will never forget. “One of the worst things that can happen to a person is to be forgotten by a person they will never forget.”

Tom’s family is planning a private service to honor his life. They ask any memorials be directed to Alzheimer’s Association in Tom’s loving memory.
