Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines.
Harriet was born August 22, 1918, in Nichols, Iowa. She lived in Burlington and Muscatine as a child. They moved to Des Moines when she was 16 and she graduated from Roosevelt High School and Drake University, where she met Fred. For several years she worked as a secretary at Bankers Life Company before becoming a mother and homemaker.
Harriet started taking piano lessons at an early age and enjoyed playing as she grew up. Later she studied pipe organ and was the organist for several years at Forest Avenue Baptist Church, and then assistant organist and pianist at Highland Park Christian Church.
In 1948 Harriet married Fred Stewart and they were blessed with 3 daughters. They were longtime members of HPCC. She was a member of PEO and Stewardess Club. Harriet was active in her church with CWF and her Sunday School Class, and served as a Deaconess. They were also active with church friends in Bridge Club and Supper Club. She and Fred enjoyed playing tennis until they were 80 years old. She liked playing bridge, cribbage and other games and was a whiz at word puzzles. Over the years she enjoyed doing a lot of sewing projects, including making robes and pajamas for her family. She and Fred also liked to travel and planned many wonderful family vacations. Harriet was a sweet and thoughtful person who was loved by many. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Luther Park.
Harriet is survived by daughters Susan Schmitz (Keith) of Elmhurst, IL, Diane Stewart (Don Thompson) of Long Beach, CA, and Betty Oestenstad (Larry) of Minnetonka, MN, grandchildren Alison and Amy Schmitz and Jason and Trevor Oestenstad, and many nieces and nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Fred; her parents; 3 sisters, Juanita Wadsworth (Lincoln), Alice Seeley (Clyde), and Jane Smith (Paul), and brothers-in-law Don Stewart (Joann), and Ken Stewart (Regina).

My condolences for the family. Death is something painful and no one wants to deal with it, but it does happen. Jehovah God knows how hard it can be for us and that's why he has provided his word the Bible to comfort us. Just take a look at a scripture that I would like to share with you: "He will wipe out the tears from our eyes and death will be no more " (Revelation 21: 3 , 4). Jehovah God promises us that in the near future we would not have to deal with death anymore. How comforting! May Jehovah comfort you during this difficult time.

Betty, how wonderful to have the time with your Mother, and I'm sure she cherished every moment. I will always remember your Mom as one of the nicest Moms from our class. I always felt you were so lucky to have such a sweetheart of a Mom! Please know I am thinking of you and your family! Hope to see you in July!

Speaking for my family, our hearts go out to all of you now with sympathy for the loss of your mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, and to those of you who were family by friendship. We are thinking of you knowing that this is a sad time for you, but also a time when you will come together and relate your wonderful and joyous memories of Harriet. Among you all, you will have an almost infinite amount of experiences and adventures to share with each other. We hope the act of sharing these cherished stories of your family lore will help ease the pain of your loss.
Speaking for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed all the times I was able to be with Harriet. Even though our visits were short and infrequent, Harriets kind and gentle loving nature and compassionate spirit always made me feel so comfortable to be around her. I loved her beautiful smile. She made me feel so welcomed. I know you are going to miss her. I will too. She was a lovely woman.

So many wonderful memories of our family time together. Yearly summer trips to Lake Okoboji; sailing, bridge, tennis, smores, squeak....... (I will mention here that this is perhaps one of the most frustrating games youll ever play. The Stewart clan seem to have mastered it though)....sorry, I digressed. Star gazing, nutty bar runs, grilling out, meals on the lawn.
Harriet was a loving mother in law, patient to the extreme when having to deal with her son in laws.......she was devoted to her family, kind, generous, thoughtful, strong in faith, caring and a good friend. I will sorely miss her as I do Fred.
