Wilma May Leaming was born October 29, 1915 in Tama County, Iowa and died peacefully January 1, 2009 at Mill Pond Care Facility in Ankeny, Iowa. Wilma spent her childhood in Traer, Iowa, where she graduated from high school and worked for a time as a telephone operator. Wilma married John B. Leaming on December 3, 1938 at the Little Brown church in Nashua, Iowa. Wilma made custom draperies for several years and throughout her life was an avid exacting and artistic quilter, winning a ribbon at the Iowa State Fair and leaving a colorful legacy for the family. Wilma spent most of her life in central Iowa, and was one of the original residents at Elsie Mason Manor and most recently lived at AHEPA Apartments in Ankeny.
Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1976. She is survived by her only child, Karen Pearce and son-in-law, William Pearce of Ankeny; two grandchildren, Mike (and Anne) Pearce and Susan (and Scott) Kirstein; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Marcus Kirstein and Ryan Pearce.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Berwick Congregational Church, of which she was a member. Many of her quilts will be on display at the service. Her body has been cremated and inurnment will be at the Woodward Cemetery in Woodward, Iowa.
