Raymond LaVerne Knox was born July 12th, 1928, on his parent’s farm near Madrid, IA. He was the second child of twelve. He passed away at his home December 31, 2008.
After graduating from high school, he joined the US Army and completed one tour of duty. Raymond married Flossie Murlene McClanahan on July 21, 1951. They had one son. Ray spent many happy hours hunting quail, fishing, camping and water skiing with his family. He loved his vegetable garden.
After retirement in 1987 from the Armstrong Tire Company, Ray became a dedicated bicyclist and made many friends among his fellow bike enthusiasts. He completed several RAGBRAIs. The highlight of his cycling career was the 1995 Iowa Sesquicentennial Bike Ride across the United States.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Murlene in 1986 and by one sister, Gloria, in 1956. Raymond is survived by his son Douglas and wife Marsha; his grandson David Knox, wife Angela and great-grandchildren Kody, Zakary and Alexis; grandson Craig Knox, wife Jamie and great-granddaughter Rowan. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Eleanor Jipp, Deloris Pagliai, Laurel Wisecup, Margaret Lanning, Grace Miller, Marilyn Donnelly, Jeanette Bentley, Carolyn Pardun, Don Knox, and John Knox. Raymond will be missed by his in-laws Loye and Pat McClanahan, Chet Beaumeister, Arlene Rinehart and many nieces and nephews and also by his loving neighbors Kim, Ling, and Tyler Keongam.
Raymond will be remembered for his kind and gracious heart and willingness to always lend a helping hand to his family and friends.
