Birdie “Mae” Smith or “Grandma” as she was affectionately known by everyone. She was born on November 23, 1926 and passed away in Des Moines at Lutheran Hospital on March 1, 2019 at the age of 92.
Mae is survived by her brother, Bob Schmidt; children, Gary (Sue) Smith, Cheryl (Jerry) Smith and Connie (Ray) Berry; grandchildren, Mary Ann, Mike, Justin, Rachele, Christina, Derek, Heather, Tracy, Joshua and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Alex, Kyle, Bryce, Ashley, Casey, Noah, Kristian, Chase and Tate.
Mae worked 49 years for the Des Moines Public Schools in the food service. She enjoyed stock car races with her son and grandson. She also wouldn’t miss her grandchildren extracurricular activities.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Smith; brother, Don; sister, Dede; and son, Albert “Tim”.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 6th at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Mae will be forever in the hearts, who had the chance to work with her. She will always be a great inspiration to us for the dedication she displayed feeding kids. Our thoughts and prayers continue for your family.

Mae touched so many lives in so many ways.....some big and some small but they all touched our hearts. She will be missed more than she ever could have even imagined.
