Arlene Navara, 68, of Mitchellville, passed away, Monday, December 1, 2008 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Arlene was born July 21, 1940, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Ada (Gillespie) Tychsen. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1958 and attended the University of Northern Iowa. Arlene married Gerald (Jerry) Navara February 22, 1959, in Marshalltown. In 1960 their daughter, Jackie, was born. Arlene, Jerry, and Jackie moved to Mitchellville in August of 1962. In 1964 their son, Timothy, was born. Arlene worked as a bookkeeper for several doctors in Marshalltown, Altoona, and Des Moines, as well as Legacy Bank in Mitchellville. She retired from the Altoona Herald-Mitchellville Index newspaper in 1999.
Arlene loved spending time with her grandchildren, reading mystery novels, designing and sewing hand sewn quilts for family members and friends, and tutoring elementary students in Harlingen, Texas. She was a regular member of the Mitchellville “Our Brothers Keepers” sewing group.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Jerry; daughter, Jackie (Paul) Loos of Storm Lake, IA; son Tim (Jenny) Navara of Lone Tree, IA; granddaughter, Ashley Loos; grandson, Quinn Navara and granddaughter, Keelea Navara; brothers, Ted Tychsen of Marshalltown and Gene Tychsen of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Phyllis Knowles.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Mitchellville United Methodist Church, 200 2nd St. NW, Mitchellville, burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown. Friends may visit with family from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, Altoona.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the family or the Mitchellville United Methodist Church in loving memory of Arlene.

Jerry and Family: My sympathy to you Jerry and your entire family at this difficult time. Was sadden to see this on the TR Website. Bill and I winter in Harlingen, Texas and see that you must have also, as she was a mentor in a school there, I am also a mentor at Stuart Place in Harlingen and that would have been something if we were at the same place. We live at Lakewood RV off Lewis Lane.
Arlene and I go back many years of course all through school, but her parents and my parents were good friends also.
We wondered what had happened as you were both signed up for the Tour and the maid-rite lunch at our old High schoolfor our 50th in September and we all missed you both, but had no idea why you didn't come, but from what I read she with cancer, she might not have been feeling well. Just didn't know about that at all.
Just have to have Peace now that she is out of pain and with her heavenly father. May God Bless you and your family.

We want to express our condolences to the entire Navara family!! Arlene was one that was loved by many, adored by her children and grandchildren!! She will definitely be missed!! May your lives be filled with everlasting memories of all the good times which were shared as a family!! Arlene along with the help of you, Jerry, raised a wonderful family and we are proud to have Tim as our son-in-law!!
