William Newton, 82, died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Bill was born May 2, 1926 to William and Helen Newton.
During WWII he was drafted into the Army, after basic training he was sent to a Navy camp. He was aboard a ship in the Pacific as an Army Shipman for 26 months until his honorable discharge in June 1951.
He worked with the little league, the Boy Scouts and he loved doing income taxes for his friends and he really enjoyed playing Santa Clause every year. He was on the Polk Co. Advisory Council for the elderly and was an older Iowa Legislature. He also worked and voted in every election since President Truman. He served as a Delaware Township Committee person for 20 years.
Surviving members of the family are his children, Janet Burris, Teari Mahony, David (Cora) Newton and Dirk (Kate) Newton; 10 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren; his siblings, Ethel Oltman, Timothy (Sandy) Newton and William Baschke; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Waneta Newton of 51 years, his father, William Newton Sr., and his mother, Helen Louise and step-father, Henry Baschke.
Funeral Services will be 12:00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will follow at the Berwick Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
