Gary R. Newsom, 66, of Des Moines passed away on November 26, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines from heart failure. Funeral services will be 12 Noon Tuesday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6-8 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Gary was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and a proud Army veteran. He had worked as a food broker and also at the airport for a short time. He is survived by his loving friend and companion Julie Berber; his brothers Fritz (Carole) Newsom of Austin, Texas, Don Newsom of Urbandale and Curt (Gloria) Newsom of Des Moines; his sons Brian and Kirby Newsom; his granddaughter Sara Newsom as well as several other grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League.

I am sorry to hear about Gary's passing. I grew up next door to the Newsoms and have often wondered where all of you had gone over the years. As a kid I remember Gary as a huge guy and the brothers teasing him and calling him pachaderm. He could have squashed them but I remember him as a gentle giant from a little kids point of view. My heartfelt condolences to all of you.
