Service Details

Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Karli, 79, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, IA.
Betsy was born August 12, 1929, to Harriet and Berger Haug in Minneapolis. She graduated from St. Louis Park High School and worked as a Girl Scout counselor teaching sailing. Many summer days and nights were also spent at her Great Uncle’s cabin on Lake Minnetonka in Mound, Minnesota.
Betsy met Vernon ‘Bud’ Karli, while they were both students at the University of Minnesota. They married and she settled in as the wife of a veterinary student. She and Bud had many adventures as a young couple raising a family in veteran’s housing on the St. Paul campus at the University of Minnesota in the early 1950’s.
After Bud graduated, they moved to Mabel, MN where they lived for 16 years. During that time, Betsy helped establish Girl Scout troops in the community, train leaders and served as the Girl Scout Cookie Chairman for many years. It was during this time that a Camp Council was formed and Betsy, as Co-Chair, was instrumental in the development of the Whispering Hills Girl Scout Camp in southeastern Minnesota.
Betsy and Bud lived in Waukon, IA and Bella Vista, AR before their final move to Waukee, IA in 2006. Throughout her life, Betsy volunteered her time for church and civic groups. She always enjoyed the water and all of its activities; swimming, canoeing, house boating, and cruising. She loved the outdoors; camping, hiking and encouraged her children in their adventures of the same. She shared her love of music with those around her as she hummed and sang her way through her days. She was a golfer, a crafter, and a gardener - willing to try new things as they came along. Bud and Betsy were old car enthusiasts and enjoyed their Old Car Club memberships. At times Betsy would drive their Model A Ford while Bud drove their Model T in parades and outings. In Waukon and Bella Vista, she was often seen “tooling” around town in her vintage Nash Metropolitan.
Betsy is survived by her loving husband, Bud; her daughter, Susan (Frank) Stork of Urbandale; her son, Steven (Jane) Karli of Ankeny; her grandchildren, Abigail, Natalie, William, and Michael Stork, Douglas and Jennifer Karli; her son-in-law, Mark Rodman of Fountain Valley, CA; and her wonderful dog, Casey. Her parents, and her daughter, Anne Rodman, preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Health Home Care Hospice, 11333 Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, IA 50322, 515-323-1119, in loving memory of Betsy.
