George Sypniewski
January 29, 2019
George Sypniewski was born September 18, 1949, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Zbigniew and Jadwiga Sypniewski. He passed away January 29, 2019, after a two and a half month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, with his family by his side.
George played football for Drake from 1968-1972, where he earned his BA and MA. After which he began his teaching and coaching career in 1972 with the Johnston School District where he remained for 35 years. While there he taught middle school and coached high school football and track. In 1989, he returned to Drake University as a football coach. In his 25 plus years at Drake there were multiple conference championships, and he became a stalwart member of the Drake coaching staff.
When not coaching, he could be found at Menards, or in his garage shop tinkering and pursuing his hobbies of wood working and glass etching. He enjoyed traveling, outdoor projects, and spending time with his family.
George is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cheryl; son, Quinn (Mia); and grandchildren, Keira and Kolt. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Westown Funeral Home, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.

Mr. Syp was a great man, and I'm sad to see him go. He was an amazing middle school teacher, an awesome high school track coach, and a wonderful father to my buddy Quinn.
It's hard to see how fragile life is and how quickly it goes by. It just seems like yesterday we were all sitting together in the bleachers hanging out at basketball tournaments or out on the track with him pushing us beyond our limits. Thanks for the good memories, Coach!
Cheryl & Quinn -- praying today that you experience peace during this difficult time.

I was honored to have Mr. George Sypniewski has a 7th grade teacher, as well as my football coach throughout high school at Johnston. It was through his honor and courage that helped so many of us grow into the men we are today, and will be forever thankful to him. My deepest condolences to Cheryl, Quinn, and the whole family.

I can remember like yesterday the first day George set foot on the football field at St. Rita H.S. Then at Drake, he always set the tone. I am so happy that I got to see him and Cheryl at the DU reunion and that final hug from George before we parted ways that Saturday night I can still feel his strength. RIP.

Thank you coach for the positive impact you had on my life and countless others. I have taken the lessons you taught me into my adult life. For that I am greatful. I have so many memories of track meets and football games. Practices and even just running or hanging out. One such memory we was training for state track meet. My leg cramped horribly. I thought I had a injury that would prevent me from running. You did a Mr. Miyagi and said, It will be ok, its just a cramp. Reassuring me I was going to be ok. And I was ok and we took third in states in the 4x100. My condolences to Cheryl and Quinn. Prayers. Rip Coach!

Cheryl and Family,
I will never forget the day in class where his lecture turned to the meaning of love (this to needle me after hearing I'd given a girl a ring).
Rest in Peace Coach.
All our love,
Warren, Kathy (Schuler), Warren, and Win Sparks
