Dean C. Smith

Dean Carroll Smith, 94, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019. There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 28, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines. Military honors will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey, Iowa.

Dean was born November 7, 1924 in Bussey, Iowa, to Ethol C. Smith and Irma Fergus Smith. His mother died a few weeks later and he was raised by his grandparents, Thomas and Minnie Lemmon Smith. After graduation from Bussey High School, he was later drafted into the Army during WWII, serving as a medic in Australia, Guam, the Philippines, and Japan. After returning home from the war, he married Bonnie J. Ethell of Attica, Iowa in 1946. They had two sons, Dean Thomas (1947) and Joseph Lee (1951). Dean worked for Odea Finance and later retired from Fawn Engineering.

Dean is survived by his sons, D. Thomas and Joseph Lee (Paulette); three grandchildren, Sarah Smith (Kireen Jackson), Nicole (Maurice) Parker, Jeremiah (Amber) Smith; five great-grandchildren; and his companion of many years, Evelyn Leigh.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie in 1997; two sisters, Doris Zimmer and Dorothea Stone; two brothers, Dale Smith and infant brother, Donald.
