Russell Frank Kinney, 58, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. Russ was born on November 26, 1949 to Donald and Mary (Dresch) Kinney in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Russ served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea until his honorable discharge. He earned his Masters Degree in Social Work from Drake University. He was a gifted and respected therapist who specialized in the treatment of adolescent children at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Orchard Place and later in private practice.
Russ is survived by his father, Donald Kinney; brother, Doug (Marianne) Kinney; sisters, Jackie Kinney and Laura (Jon) Ward and 13 nieces and nephews. Russ was preceded in death by his mother Mary Kinney.
Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 28, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., burial will follow at Kinkade Cemetery in Alexandria, MN.
Memorial contributions may be made to Orchard Place, 925 Porter Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50315 in loving memory of Russ.

Dear Kinney family,
We would like to extend our sincere condolences for the loss of Russ.
We were shocked to see his death notice, as I am sure many were. We worked with Russ years ago at the Polk County Youth Shelter and Detention Center. Russ always brought a smile to each and every one of us and we cherish our memories of him. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Sincerely, Mary and Rick Boots
ps. I noticed at the memorial that it was Boots Studio that took the photo of Russ........Rick's dad owned that business for years before he died.
