Maurine Lembke
January 20, 2019
Maurine I. Lembke, 88, died January 20, 2019, at Fountain West Care Center in West Des Moines. Services will be held in the spring, Maurine’s favorite time of year.
Maurine was born March 20, 1930, in Des Moines to Guy and Pearl (Phelps) Christian. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. She began her career as a bookkeeper for Sanders Motors where she met future husband, Vernon. They married in 1950 and raised their family on the southside of Des Moines. In 1959, Maurine started working for Standard Bearings Company, before retiring in 1981. She continued working part time for Ahl’s Accounting until she was 78 years old.
Maurine enjoyed spending summers at the family cabin at Lost Island Lake and on the farm in South Dakota. She loved reading, gardening, cooking, entertaining, music, dancing and playing cards with friends. Her home was always open and there was always room for one more at her table.
Maurine is survived by her daughter, Linda Godwin; son Doug Lembke; grandchildren, Kate Williams (Dave), Kyle Olson (Paul) and Kelsey Godwin.
Great-grandchildren Olya, Reed and Rowan Williams; and Luke and Paul Olson; sister Marge Ivanoff and brother Bill Christian (Dunky) as well as her beloved nieces, nephews and South Dakota family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon, step-daughter Renee Hansen and sister Mildred Mettler.
The family would like to thank her caregivers in the Progressive Care Unit at Mercy Hospital, Brittany and the EveryStep Hospice team and her beloved care family at Fountain West. You all made a difference.
Memorial contributions may be directed to EveryStep Hospice, 3000 Easton Boulevard, Des Moines, Iowa 50317.

I was just a small girl when my family lived around the corner from the Lembke clan, but I'm left with the memory of it being a "fun" place - that's quite an impression on a four-year-old! Linda and Doug, deepest condolences from the Larry & Shirley McCauley Family.

Linda and Doug: I'm deeply saddened to hear of Maurine's (I've always known her as Chris, of course) passing. Chris always had such a beautiful way of making everyone feel special, but with your folks being my godparents, I always felt like I had a little closer bond and I enjoyed it tremendously. I always loved the way Chris made it apparent that she was totally focused on the person she was talking with. Everything else disappeared when I had a conversation with her, even as a small child. She is one of the most warm and loving people I've known and she is in my heart always. Please keep me posted on a future memorial service and let me know if there is anything I can do to help any time. All my love to you and your families. Prayers for comfort and healing for all of you.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Maurine. She was my mothers roommate at Fountain West, and she was such a nice person. She was fun to talk to and my mom really enjoyed her company. I really appreciate how Linda was so nice and caring for my mother also. Maurine always made that stop to see my mom--which I will be honest--was not always something I look forward to--worth taking the time to do.
