Yvonne S. Dawson, 91, of Des Moines, died Monday, January 21, 2019, at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, at Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will be at Hartman Cemetery, Truro. Visitation with the family will be one hour before services. A general memorial fund has been established and condolences may be left for the family at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
Yvonne was born August 16, 1927, to James E. “Pete” and Bernice Irene (Sinn) Sullivan in Truro. Her early schooling was in Truro, but she graduated from Des Moines Technical High School after the family moved to Des Moines. Yvonne spent most of her life in Des Moines, but in early adulthood lived in places such as Cheyenne, WY, San Francisco, Seattle, Milwaukee and Fort Huachuca, AZ.
Yvonne spent much of her life working for the federal government. She was employed by the U.S. Army and the Internal Revenue Service before going to work for the Social Security Administration, from where she retired in 1987. In retirement, she enjoyed keeping up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as spoiling her toy poodles, Schatzi and Chloe, and later, Sammie. She enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events, and advocating for her favorite Democrat politicians. Known to her nieces and nephews as Auntie Bon, she was a strong and independent woman who was never afraid to voice her opinion or stand up for herself. She also had great determination in overcoming health problems and living independently in the house she had built for her in 1964.
She is survived by her son, David of Moweaqua, IL; three grandchildren, Eric Dawson of Charleston, IL, Jeff Harrison and Christina (Michael) Harrison Nevitt, both of Lincoln, NE; two great-grandsons, Noah Nevitt and Drew Nevitt; sister, Ann Beeler of New Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, James and Sandi Sullivan of Santa Cruz, CA; and nieces and nephews, Susan Gannon, Rick Harter, Bill Harter, Don Harter, Steve Beeler, Karin Sullivan, James Sullivan, Keli Sullivan, and David Baxter. She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Jack Williams.
Special thank-yous to Dr. Corrine Ganske and staff for their longtime care and compassion, and her nephews Jack and Rick for all they did so she could continue living in her home.

Hi Ann & Jim & David - I am a friend of Yvonne's for many years now. Her mom & my mom were best friends since they were 5 yrs. old. Yvonne brought Bernice up to Sask. to visit mom many years ago. I 1st visited you all when I went to Iowa with mom when I was 5 yrs. old. Think you were kind of stuck with me Ann ! My sister & I took mom to Iowa to visit at one time & I visited Yvonne at others times. We became good friends & were in touch by email or letters always. Sent Yvonne a Christmas card & message this past Dec. Did not hear from her & was really ill from just after Christmas for a month or so. Have been trying to find Yvonne for some time. Could not remember your name David , nor your married name Ann & could not find Jim on social media. today I found this & it broke my heart. I am so sorry for our loss & sorry that I could not express my love & sympathies earlier. I know you all have great memories as I do. Also know that she was not well nor very mobile for some time so am happy to think of her smiling, happy & enjoying herself singing & dancing with friends & family & the ones of my family that she knew !! Yvonne was a blessing to me & to you all. I am sure. Love & Hugs for you all, Birdie Herriot.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your loved one Ms. Yvonne Dawson. At this difficult time God's Word the Bible gives us comfort and hope. John 5:28, 29, "Do not be amazed at this for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.....to a resurrection of life." I hope these verses help ease your pain.

To Yvonne's family: Yvonne was a kind & generous co-worker when I was transferred temporarily to the DM SSA office in 1983-84. She shared her wisdom & humor with me, & I enjoyed working with her.
May wonderful memories of Yvonne bring peace & comfort.

Yvonne was a great neighbor. My daughter and I enjoyed visiting with her. She was like another grandma to us. A sweet lady that will be missed.

Yvonne was a lovely lady who will be remembered by all those who knew her. I enjoyed our correspondence regarding Loomis family history and the humorous online items and Irish proverbs she shared. In her memory I quote, "Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear."
