James Paul Mitchell
January 12, 2019
James Paul Mitchell, 88, joined the love of his life, Marilyn, January 12, 2019.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Hamilton’s, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA.
Jim was born July 15, 1930 to Robert Dale and Elsie Elizabeth (Erickson) Mitchell in Des Moines. He attended Van Meter Schools where he met his future wife, Marilyn Henderson, when she tripped him the first day of school.
Jim passed up a Simpson College basketball scholarship to attend Drake University with Marilyn because he did not want “any city slickers” sweeping her off her feet! Jim and Marilyn married August 27, 1950. After graduation, Jim served as a teacher, coach and principal in the Lenox and Des Moines School Districts. Jim made a lasting impact especially as Principal during desegregation of Perkins and King Schools. While juggling work and family, Jim earned his Master’s in Education from Drake. After retiring, Jim was even called back to serve as Principal of Moulton Elementary.
Jim was an avid sports fan, fisherman and hunter. Each year, he took two fishing trips to Canada, including his last one in September. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. Most importantly, he never missed his children’s sports and activities. Jim was a wonderful, doting grandfather and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events, taking them on shopping trips and sharing his words of wisdom. Jim’s sense of humor endeared him to everyone.
Although Jim wasn’t in the military, he looked to serve his community in other ways. He had a deep affection for all things patriotic. He was a powerhouse among men, genuine and well-loved.
Jim will be greatly missed by his children, Greg (Donna), Jerry (Rose), and Susan (Randy) Bretag; grandchildren, Jimmy, Molly and Jerry Mitchell, Sara (Jeff) Mitchell, Bart (Sara) Bretag, and Blair (Carl) Theissen; great-grandchildren, Hanna and Jackson Mitchell, Ashley Bretag, Logan Cheatham, and Barrett Bretag, Aubry and Madi Theissen, and Johnny Mitchell; siblings, Bob (Betty) Mitchell and Patty (Frank) Sarcone; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents; and siblings, Jack Mitchell and Charlene Armstrong.
The family thanks Amy Barth and her outstanding staff for their love and care of Jim at The Villages at Legacy.
Memorial contributions may be directed to John Stoddard Cancer Center, 1415 Woodland Ave.,Ste. E-200, DM, 50309.

I had the privilege of working with Mr. Mitchell at Watrous Elementary. I enjoyed the straight forward and fair ways he treated everyone. I always felt I could share my views on things, although he didn't always agree, and told me so in no uncertain terms! I have very fond memories. Wishing you peace at this difficult time.

Randy and I are saddened to think of your loss. Jim was a cheerful spirit in the group of elementary principals. As an elementary colleague of mine, I always found Jim to be sincere and knowledgeable. He was honest and credible and so appreciated. May fond memories, family and friends comfort you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mary and Randy Gordon

A life well lived! Jim's zest for living every day, brought joy to all those around him.You did not have to be around Jim for very long without recognizing the pride and LOVE he had for his family. He displayed all the good virtues a man should have: great husband, father, uncle, cousin, friend..and Christian. He will be truly missed, but he leaves us with wonderful memories, experiences, compassion, kindness and always a sincere smile....

Oh, dear Mr. Mitchell, How I adored you. I was one of the privileged who had the honor of working with Jim at King and Perkins. We were a young, renegade staff out to change the world and Jim was the best leader imaginable. He had a firm, tough, caring way of dealing with our kids that earned their respect. He talked fast and walked fast and always had his hands in his pockets! His sense of humor and "earthy" language were hysterical! There are a million Jim Mitchell stories out there. He inspired me to stretch further, reach higher, and try harder. Jim never, ever micromanaged his staff. He had complete confidence in us and always, always, always had our back. We were a true family. Jim Mitchell is a legend in the Des Moines Public Schools and knowing him and working with him was one of he greatest joys of my life. RIP, Mr. Mitchell.

Dear Greg-Jerry-Susan & Family:
Betty and I were so saddened to learn of the recent passing of our good friend Jim Mitchell. Jim and I were appointed elementary principles together at the same time in the DMPS, Jim was assigned to Lucas and I was assigned to Watrous Elementary school. Both of us were very anxious to do a good job and we called each other almost every day to check in and for added support. Jim was highly respected by his teachers, staff, his school community, and other elementary principles and administrators. Jim could solve any problem within five minutes and his colorful language and leadership style was admired by all who knew him. There are many stories of admiration we regarding our friend Jim. Our thoughts and prayers will be with each of you in the days that lie ahead. One thing for certain, Jim is now in heaven with Marilyn and smiling down upon us all.
