Dominic "Meco" Colosimo
January 11, 2019
Dominic S. Colosimo “Meco” slipped peacefully from his wife's arms into God's in the early morning hours of January 11, 2019.
He was born on March 9, 1932 to Rose Soda and Tony Colosimo. Meco was the sixth of eight children and after five daughters, he was the first son followed by two more. He graduated from Dowling High School. Meco was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and was fortunate to be able to go on an honor flight to Washington DC.
Meco was a colorful man and never knew a stranger. He owned several restaurants in the Des Moines and people always felt welcomed into his establishments. If you needed something and he couldn't give it to you, he would find someone who could. He had a huge heart and did many things for many people no one ever knew about and was heavily involved in the muscular dystrophy fundraising for many years.
He was an avid Hawkeye fan and had held season tickets for many seasons.
Meco was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mary DeFino, Josephine Cardamon, and Angelina Colosimo and a nephew, Frank Colosimo. He is survived by his wife, Renee and her children, Craig, (Melissa) Bailey of Madison, Wisconsin and Erin Davidson (Gary) of Des Moines; and three children by a previous marriage, Katrina (Marvin) Slovak of Dallas, Texas, Tony (LuAnn) Colosimo of Albia, Iowa, and Donell (Mike) O'Connor of Des Moines; two sisters, Isabell Marturello and Rose Punelli; and two brothers, Frank and Charles (Carolyn) Colosimo. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Meco was a testament that a family goes far beyond blood.
We will miss him and keep him in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 16th at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street at 10:00 a.m. followed by a private burial.
Donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church or the Alzheimer's Association in loving memory of Meco.
Ti amo. Until we meet again.

Meco was a very special friend of mine and many other umpires who worked the American Association. Meco opened his heart and restaurant to use after every game we umpired. Meco always had a kind word and never had a bad word for us. I will always remember his all pork (very lean pork) meatballs that seemed to be endless. Very sorry to hear of his passing. God Bless
