Irene Strawn

Irene Ruth (Jarrett) Strawn passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the age of 90 years, 2 months, 1 day. She was surrounded by her family and caring staff in her home at Courtyard Estates in Pleasant Hill.
Irene was born in Monte Vista, Colorado on September 10, 1918, attended nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado, graduating as an RN in 1940. She traveled to Southern California where she met her husband, Alfred Ellis “Joe” Strawn. They married in Yuma, Arizona in 1942 and set up housekeeping in Manhattan Beach, California. She retired from South Bay Community School District in 1980. She continued to live in California until 1989 when she moved to Altoona, Iowa to be near her daughter and family. She was a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church.
Irene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Lyle Havener of Pleasantville; three grandchildren, Kimberly Irene Petersen-Robinson of Pleasantville, Allison Lyn Leesley of Boonsboro, Maryland and Chad Allen Havener of Bondurant; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Combs of Manteca, California; five nephews and five nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred “Joe” Strawn; her parents, John and Clara (Bachelder) Jarrett; two brothers; one sister; one niece and one nephew.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW in Altoona. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2008 at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at a later date in Santa Barbara Cemetery in California. Memorial contributions may be made to the Altoona United Methodist Church in loving memory of Irene.
