Dana L. Barrer
January 07, 2019
On January 7, 2019, after 98 international trips, Dana took his final trip – heaven, after a battle with liver and colon cancer.
Dana graduated from Southeast Polk High School, University of Northern Iowa, as well as Drake Law School. Dana had a number of jobs from being a lawyer to washing windows. He had a passion for life and if he was no longer enjoying a job, he would seek out something else. Dana was currently working at Iowa Workforce Development (IWD).
Dana was a man of conversation and could talk to anyone about anything. His ultimate passion was traveling, sharing his love for travel with everyone. He turned his travel passion into two businesses, Glass Shoppe Imports where he imported crystal and art glass from the Czech Republic, and Dana Barrer Photography where he shared his photos from all over the world.
Dana’s smile, wicked sense of humor and scary smart intellect will be missed.
Dana is survived by his mother, Judith (Bjork) Barrer; sister, Diane (Barrer) Workman (Kevin); brother, Jerry Barrer; nieces, Annalee, Jennifer, Jessica, and Joelle; as well as several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Barrer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street in Des Moines, with visitation to begin at 9:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Mitchellville Cemetery following services.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Furry Friends Refuge or EveryStep Hospice in loving memory of Dana.

I remember the real Dana for torturing my family and I with inappropriate phone calls at all hours of the night when he obtained our information from child support recovery unit in wapello County. How this man ever secured a job in government after calling underage boys that he got from his case records at CSRU is beyond me. Where was Chris Hansen to help us receive the help to expose this nasty creature? He was a pedophile who caused a lot of people a lot of conflict. Instead of hiding him accountable the county attorney dropped the charges. How is that for justice? Dana deserved what he got in the end. Everyone needs to remember him for child predator he was.

I have fond memories of Dana all the way back to kindergarten. In my mind I can picture his 6th birthday party and a game involving a relay race and eating a marshmallow before tagging off your teammate to run the next leg. I can SEE a 6-year-old Dana chewing that marshmallow! I'm sad to learn my childhood friend's life ended much too soon, but his memory will live on with those who knew him.

I worked with Dana at Iowa Workforce Development for quite a few years. He was such a tremendous help to me when I transferred into his unit. He was so intelligent and had such a quick wit. I still smile when I remember the funny things he said. After I retired, Dana still kept in touch with me and comforted me with encouraging words when I was going through my own medical situations. He was such a good person and friend, and I will truly miss him. Thank you, Dana, for being a part of my life.

Dean and I were blessed to have Dana attend our recent wedding in October. Even though flying was difficult, he made the effort to support us. I saw him one last time at breakfast in December,
and he was as passionate as ever when he talked about traveling. Dana - youve got wings to fly now! Our prayers go out to Danas family and friends in this difficult time.

Our grandparents lived two houses from Dana and his family in Mitchellville, and when we would visit them, we usually found ourselves running around with Dana, Diane, and Jerry, roaming around on their farm and the streets of Mitchellville. Although I had not seen Dana in many years, my wife, Michelle, stayed in some contact with him through Facebook. Our thoughts and prayers are with Danas family and may Dana rest in piece.
