Richard I. Duckworth
December 30, 2018
Richard Duckworth, 78, went to become God’s handyman on Sunday, December 30, 2018, following a valiant, 14-month fight against a brutal enemy - pancreatic cancer. The family is grateful to have been able to honor his wishes to spend his final days at home in the care of those who loved him.
Rich is survived by his first love and wife of 59 years, Velma; daughter Deb (Paul Stevens), son Craig (Tracey) Duckworth; 5 Grandchildren – Shawna (James) McFadden, Chad (Betsy) Stevens, Britni (Chris) Delva, Justin (Zoyla Alvarez) Duckworth and Jordan Duckworth; and 11 great-grandchildren. Rich was born to Neil and Dora Duckworth and was raised on a farm in Lucas County, Iowa, along with a sister, Marie Clark and two brothers, Marvin (Diane) Duckworth and Ed (Carolyn) Duckworth, all of whom survive him as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
Growing up on a farm instilled in Rich the value of hard work. He was the guy who fixed everything for everyone; never too busy to help, no matter how big or little the task. He was a tireless worker for the employers in his life, including 35 years spent at Armstrong/Titan Tire and 17 years at Norwalk Ready-Mix.
Over the years, Rich and Velma made many dear friends who shared their love of square dancing, camping, and wintering in Harlingen, Texas.
He will be remembered for his sweet disposition and the way he loved EVERYONE.
The family will welcome friends to share memories at Wakonda Christian Church, 3938 Fleur Drive, Des Moines. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 3, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m., and a Celebration of Life will be on Friday, January 4, at 10 a.m. Private burial to take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either Mercy Hospice or Wakonda Christian Church.

Velma& Family: You are in our thoughts and prayers. We will miss Rich so much, he was a very wonderful, sweet person.
We are blessed to have you both as friends. If not for both of you, we probably would not have gone to Texas for the winters.
May you find comfort in the loving arms of the Lord.
