Ruth Howe
December 24, 2018
Ruth Howe, one week shy of her 100th birthday, died on Christmas Eve 2018. We think she wanted to make sure she was remembered.
Ruth was above all, a loving and caring wife, mother and friend. She was also a professional singer, starting her singing career on WHO radio when she was in junior high school. Her career included a degree from Drake, then singing in various venues, including churches, synagogues, radio, and at KRNT Theater. Ruth was also active in many music groups, and worked as a substitute teacher, and for several years at The Book Store.
In 1941, Ruth married the love of her life, Len Howe, who was a newscaster at WHO. They had three girls, Sydney, Tracey and Lindsay. Len died in 1982 at the age of 66.
In addition to her daughters, Ruth is survived by two sons-in-law, Chuck Mohns and Brad Willcox; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many others who adopted her as their "other mom", including two foreign exchange students.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice. Condolences at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

My mother (Kay Peck) and Ruth became lifelong friends following their days at WHO Radio and I admired Ruth just as much. What a beautiful, gracious lady she was! She will be remembered by so many.

I enjoyed singing with Ruth in the Des Moines Concert Singers. She shared her recipe for Almond Bars. It is still my "go to" cookie. Have shared it with many people.

Ruth was a wonderful nextdoor neighbor. She always wore a beautiful smile. We will miss chatting with her and waving at her from the backyard. It always made our day seeing her.
