Service Details

Alan James “Woody” Woodman went home to be with the Lord on December 24, 2018. He passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa.
Woody was born to Carol Mae (Granzow) and James William Woodman on March 16, 1948 in Des Moines, IA. He grew up in Monroe, IA and Hamilton, IL graduating from Hamilton High School in 1966. Upon graduation he returned to Des Moines where he attended Grandview College and Drake University majoring in vocal performance.

He was an accomplished musician who spent many years as an entertainer playing the drums and singing in various groups and venues across the country. His gift of performing transferred well into later careers in sales and retail, especially when he owned a convenience store where he greatly enjoyed getting to know his customers and always having the chance to entertain them with his quick wit and humor.

Woody could light up a room with his smile and his “ebulliently effervescent” personality. Most importantly, he loved the Lord and was a faithful servant to Jesus. He was a tireless warrior for Christ who led many to the Lord with his powerful testimony. In his later years he worked as an intake coordinator at Bethel Mission with Hope Ministries where he could put his discipleship into action. He was also a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he was a trustee and continued to share not only his testimony but his musical gifts by singing, playing drums and bass guitar. He also enjoyed taking care of the church and even took great pleasure in mowing the lawn in the summers. His incredible life touched many and he will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

Woody is survived by his only daughter Jennifer (Chris) Lang along with his grandchildren Jackson and Avery. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carol and James Woodman and his sister, Diane Fox.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Trinity Baptist Church, 4600 SW 26th St, Des Moines with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
