Dean Smith

Dean A. Smith, 75, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Eastside Church of the Nazarene, 1451 E. 25th St., Des Moines with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines.
Dean was born March 12, 1933 in Lake Mills, IA to John Sr. and Agnes Smith and grew up in Nora Springs, IA. He worked as a freight conductor for Rock Island Railroad. After his retirement, he worked for Iowa Realty in Altoona. Dean was a member of Eastside Church of the Nazarene and was an avid golfer.
Dean is survived by his wife, Carol; children, David (Beth) Smith, Daniel (Cathy) Smith, Sherry (Ron) Lawlor and Larry (Shelly) Smith; three sisters, Ila Cole, Nadine Behne and LaVonne Benson; two brothers, Charles and Roger Smith; 13 grandchildren, Ian, Emily and Abby Smith, Christopher (Christina), Sara, Joshua, Joseph, Samuel, Thomas, Lydia and Maggie Lawlor and Aaron and Olivia Smith; and one great-grandchild, Katherine Lawlor. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
