Service Details

James Whitten passed away on December 23rd, 2018 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 81.

James was born on July 28th, 1937 to Harold and Evelyn Whitten in Des Moines, one of nine children. As an adult, James prided himself in his work as a contractor, working in every aspect of the construction business that he could. James held a lifelong passion for cars, his most prized possession being his 1932 pearl red Chevy street rod. At the time of his passing, James and his wife Sharon were members of Rolling Relics Car Club in Des Moines. He loved cruising through town with his wife, and took longer road trips from time to time. James’ love for cars even won him a trophy at the Good Guys car show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Even in “retirement” James hardworking attitude remained, becoming the head of maintenance at a large apartment complex in Des Moines. His love for his grandchildren was evident in all aspects of his life, and he would support them at every sporting event, though he wasn’t a sports fan himself! James will be remembered as a man who dropped everything to help those who needed a hand.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sharon; daughters, Tami (James), and Becky; son, Weston (Melody); Sisters, Joy (Butch) and Betty (Bill); grandchildren Nicole, Jamie, Jennifer, Christopher, Cassandra, Victoria and Clayton; eight great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, as well as five brothers and one sister.

Per James’ wishes, he will be cremated.
