Joseph Edward Egan, 82, of Cumming, GA passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Thursday, December 20, 2018 after a short illness. He was born in Ellsworth, MN on August 1, 1936 and graduated from Ellsworth High School before joining the Navy. He was stationed in Japan for most of his Naval service. Returning from the Navy, Joe enrolled in college where he met his future wife at a CYO dance. Joe married Mary Janice Carbin on March 3, 1962 in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Melrose, IA.

Graduating from Drake University in 1963 with a degree in Actuarial Science, Joe accepted a job with Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT. As his career advanced, he accepted more senior roles at companies in Greenville, SC and then in Cleveland, OH. He completed his career with his retirement from Actuarial Resources in Alpharetta, GA. Joe was a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Much of Joe's free time over the years was spent at his vacation home on Kiawah Island, SC. He traveled extensively in Asia with his wife and daughters. He also enjoyed trips to Europe and most recently to Ireland. Joe was an avid Civil War and history buff who also enjoyed trips to NYC to see Broadway shows. He was devoted to fitness, enjoyed long runs on the beach at Kiawah and early morning workouts at the gym before going to the office. He will be remembered for his brilliant mind and his generous spirit.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Janice; two daughters, Kathy Egan (Brian Quam) of Acworth, GA and Elaine (Edmond) Hannigan of Bronxville, NY; his sister, Margaret (Terry) Horras of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Rosemary Egan of De Soto, KS; and his grandchildren, Avery, Andrew, Edmond and Emma. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Frances Burke Egan; and his brother William Egan.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28, 2018 in Des Moines, IA. Visitation will begin at 11 AM, followed by Mass at 12 noon in the Basilica of St. John. Services will conclude with internment at Glendale Cemetery.
