Sharon "Sharri" (Ness) Mahoney
December 17, 2018
Sharon (Ness) Mahoney, 75, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her Beaverdale home on December 17, 2018, surrounded by her closest family and friends. She was born September 6, 1943 to the late Clifford and Elsie Ness in Sioux City, Iowa. Sharon was a graduate from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa as well as from Iowa State University. She taught English for over 20 years, and numerous students won writing awards.
In her room hung a sign that read “Don’t Postpone Joy.” Whether it was to her students in her classroom, the people she met while traveling, or her family at Sunday morning brunches, Sharri truly lived her life to this statement, spreading joy, love, and happiness to everyone she met. She was one of the most genuine, kind hearted souls, her strength showing every day. She loved taking pictures, especially of her grandkids, and spending an amazing amount of precious time with her family; not to mention the countless hours she spent sitting on the bleachers watching those she loved.
Sharri is survived by her beloved husband, James; her daughter, Erin (Pat) Yacinich of Adel, Iowa; her son, Tim (Shannon) Mahoney of Arlington Heights, Illinois; her son, Mike (Pam) Mahoney of Waukee, Iowa; her grandchildren, Jessie (Rob), Jake (Jordan), Shea, Luke, Jack, Aubrey, Zoey, and Bailey; her great-grandson, Tommy; her brother, Gary (Heather) Ness of Worthington, Ohio; her lifelong friends; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Elsie Ness.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospice for their care and support. The visitation will be held from 5-7:30 p.m., followed by a prayer service, on Thursday, December 20 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with a graveside service to follow at Glendale Cemetery. The family will welcome friends for a luncheon at Christopher’s Restaurant immediately following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future family named scholarship fund. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

It was an honor and a privilege to have worked with Sharri at St. Anthony school. We shared a lot of laughter and a few tears. I'm also so thankful that my children were fortunate to have had her as their teacher. She made a positve difference in their lives.

Ms. Mahoney was one of my favorite teachers at St. Anthonys. She made everyones day better. I remember how she was always smiling, genuinely happy as well as interested in us as individuals; we used to talk about baseball.
I am so sorry for your loss, she was an extraordinary person.

I was a student at St. Anthony's. I always thought Mrs. Mahoney was the prettiest teacher. Plus, she was always very kind and patient with us students. I have never forgotten her all these years later. May she rest in peace.

To Jim and family. You don't need me to tell you just how special Sharri was. She is one of my all-time favorite baseball wives. It was always a pure pleasure to run into her ( and Jim) at the yard. She will be missed, and my prayer is that she gets to be near, but not too near, a ballpark. Those with her will enjoy the the event, no matter what the score. May she rest in peace and may God Bless this special lady's memory. Until we meet again!
