Vina Thorpe

Vina P. Thorpe, 102, of Des Moines died Wednesday at Calvin Community. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, October 20, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue; visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Vina was born March 25, 1906 in Centerville, Iowa, moving to Des Moines in 1917. She graduated from East High School and attended Drake University. In 1933 Vina married Ray E. Thorpe. Together they owned and operated Thorpe Publications, which printed 8 weekly newspapers. Vina enjoyed traveling, antiques and was a gifted writer. Some of her writing is on the Iowa Women’s Archives. She was a member of the Questers, Quota Club and First Baptist Church.
Vina is survived by her sister, Genevieve Kuyper; nephews, Kip (LuAnn) Kuyper and Rick Shank; and niece, Jeannine (Bruce) Brande. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray E. Thorpe.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or Calvin Community in loving memory of Vina.
