Dorothy Hurst

Dorothy Helen Stiastny Hurst, 93, formerly of Urbandale, IA passed away on August 14, 2008 in Kissimmee, FL of complications of a stroke. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.
Dorothy was born September 1, 1914 in Lincoln, NE to Charles and Roxsena Stiastny. In 1933, she eloped and married Harry L. Hurst. She operated her own beauty salon until moving to Denver, CO in 1946. The family moved to Des Moines, IA in 1947. She retired from Meredith Publishing Co. where she was a Copy Editor for Successful Farming Magazine. She attended Drake University while working and raised three daughters. She was active in many organizations including the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, TTT, Sunbonnet Doll Club, Kate Shelly Doll Club and the UFDC. She won National Awards for the period dolls she dressed. She was also a member of the USPS and the Des Moines Boat Club.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Betsy (Steve) Hurst of Kissimmee, FL, and Jane (Stan) Sondall of Urbandale, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, her husband, and her daughter, Sue Hanson. We are honored to have had her in our lives.
