Lucy Garland
December 04, 2018
Lucy Ellen Garland, 92, passed away December 5, 2018 at Prairie Hills Des Moines Retirement Community.
Lucy was born March 10, 1926 to Gys Bert and Clara Mabel (Richards) Weeda on the family farm near Tingley, Iowa. She graduated from Tingley High School. Lucy married Dean, her childhood sweetheart on May 3, 1944 while Dean was on a 7 day leave from the Navy during WWII. In 1958 they started Ford & Garland Radio with partners Henry & Bonnie Ford in Downtown Des Moines. Lucy also worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield and at Park Avenue & Wright Elementary Schools as a school lunch clerk so she could be with her grandchildren. They loved to travel. They also loved antiquing. They had driven in every state except Alaska. While admiring the highlights of each state they had to take in the antique malls. They also had a booth in the Red Ribbon antique mall in Pella where they made many friends. Lucy loved to crochet. She lovingly made afghans for all her children and grandchildren which they treasure to this day. Lucy was a member of the Red Hat Club and a longtime member of Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church.
Lucy is survived by her husband of 74 years, Dean; children, Steve (Sandra) Garland, Susan (Pete) Vivone, Dennis (Paula) Garland, Debra (Eric) Jensen and Jerry (Debbie) Garland; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings; and granddaughter, Diana Vivone.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2018 at Fort Des Moines United Methodist, 6205 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 11th at the church. Lucy will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of the Midwest in loving memory of Lucy.

It was my privilege to know Lucy. I was her hairstylist the past few years. She was sharp, and had a great sense of humor. She Loved her Family. We will miss her, but we will see her again if we Love Jesus.

I will miss my dear Aunt Lucy more than words can say. For the last 10 years I have called her on the phone every Sunday evening at 5 PM to visit. (I live in WA state) We laughed and cried and gossiped! I can remember as a young girl sitting on the piano bench beside her and listening to her play and sing. She will be forever in my heart.
Love Donna
