John Ackelson

John E. Ackelson, 82, died on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at the VA Hospital surrounded by his family, after suffering complications from a fall Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. and continue until the time of service. A reception at AMVETS Post 2, 2818 Fifth Ave., Des Moines will be held immediately following services.
John served his country in both World War II and Korea. As he recalled his life’s stories throughout the years they contained both history and humor. These were the things that shaped his life and for which he will be remembered.
John was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his daughter, Jonnell (Gregg) Rupp, his sons, Richard (Joyce) Porter, Art (Kathy) Ackelson, George (April) Ackelson, and John (Janice) Ackelson, his sister, Mary Lou Sample, his brother, Gene Ackelson, his grandchildren, Mark, Chris, Brandon, Ashlee, Jeff, Jessie, Nicole, A.J., Chelsea, Danielle, Michelle, and Patrick, and his great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Wayne Ackelson, and one grandson, Shawn Porter.
