Margaret Anne Umphress

Margaret Anne Umphress, 93, passed away November 24, 2018 at Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, Iowa. She was born August 9, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa to William and Sarah (Mann) Gilleran.

Margaret loved baking and was famous for her Santa Claus cookies. She wrote short stories and poetry, many of which were published. Margaret loved St. Patrick’s Day and had visited Ireland. She was quite the dresser and always had matching jewelry, shoes and hat. Margaret enjoyed playing cards and loved being a grandma to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Margaret is survived by sons, Thomas (Lea Ann), Stephen, William (Christine), and David Umphress; daughter, Geri Best; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Katherine. She was preceded in death by son, Joe “Paul” Umphress and daughter, Paula Harvey.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 30, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. with the service at 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines.
