Burleigh “Bud” Newberg was born July 31, 1924. He went to be with the Lord surrounded by his loving family at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, IA on September 30, 2008. Bud lost his wife Thelma after 61 years of marriage on August 30, 2007.
Bud leaves behind son, Dan (Sioux) Newberg; daughter Vickie (Clare) Bangs; sister Vera Mason; grandchildren, Christopher Newberg, Michelle (Jeff) Chiodo, Scot (Amy) Newberg, Jason (Kristina) Bangs, Jamie Bangs, Jim, Jake, and Talia Chiodo; great grandchildren Tessa, Jasmn, Riley, Mitchell, Brock, Domonic, and Noah; and many nieces and nephews.
Bud retired from Hy-Vee Food Stores in Shenandoah after 37 years in 1986. He returned to Hy-Vee in Des Moines in 2002 as the “Grill Master” serving sandwiches to many customers until he lost his eye sight in 2004.
Bud loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved gardening, dancing, playing cards, reminiscing about old times, collecting Hy-Vee memorabilia, watching Arena Football and Iowa Hawkeyes. Bud was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years, and was a member of the VFW and the Lion’s Club.
Bud never knew a stranger, he was loved by everyone he met. He will be missed by family and friends from many states. Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Health Homecare and the Iowa Department of the Blind.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 3, 2008 at the Bondurant Cemetery. Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens is handling arrangements.
