Robert C. Gray, 67 years, 10 months, 6 days, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Robert was born February 22, 1939 to Thomas J. and Helen A. (Tollen) Gray in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1956 and then enlisted into the Navy. Robert served two tours in Vietnam as a photographer and retired from the Navy in 1975. He photographed the dedication of the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and General Douglas McCarthur’s funeral.
Robert was a life member of AmVets Post #2, member of the VFW Post #9662 and of the Fleet Reserve Association. He enjoyed fishing, playing cribbage and pitch, and spending time with his family.
Robert is survived by his wife, Janet (Roberts) Gray of Des Moines; children, William (Dina) Gray of West Des Moines and Lana (Remie) Harris of Windsor Heights; grandchildren, Kyle, Christina, and Michelle; brothers, John T. Gray of Red Oak, Frank Gray of Des Moines, William (Connie) Gray of Krum, TX, and Roger Gray of Bullhead City, AZ; sisters, Marcella Pister of Loveland, CO and Mildred Gray of Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law, Elsie Gray of Red Oak; and a host of other family and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ernest, Daniel, and identical twin, Norbert; and sisters, Eula Orelup and Katherine Lewis.
Memorial contributions may be given to Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House or American Cancer Society.
