Thomas Edward Stockebrand, Jr.
November 12, 2018
Thomas Edward Stockebrand, Jr. died unexpectedly at the age of 69 on November 12, 2018 in Des Moines IA. Tom was born on November 14, 1948 in Independence, KS the eldest child of Nora Marie (Karthans) and Thomas Edward Stockebrand, Sr. He was active in Boy Scouts and church youth groups. Tom graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Business Administration and had remained a lifelong fan of the Jayhawk basketball team.
Tom spent his career in the insurance industry and provided pre-licensing and continuing education for insurance agents, which he enjoyed until the time of his death. He met Carol Behrens in an insurance class and the couple married on May 14, 1988. Tom was active at Meredith Drive Reformed Church singing in the choir, going on mission trips to Haiti and Honduras, and was a deacon of the church.
Anyone who knew Tom knows he loved to talk. It’s not surprising that he was active in various Toastmaster clubs, and held various leadership roles including District Governor. He was also a member of Central Iowa Parliamentarians where he learned leadership skills in conducting meetings. He had a passion for politics, was very active in the caucuses, and often worked at the polls.
Tom loved being around family and enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews grow up. He treasured time on the Behrens’ Farm trying to play weekend farmer, and their many trips to New York and California to visit relatives.
Tom is survived by his wife Carol; and his sister, Jeanne (Ted) Roth from Carlsbad, CA; his parents-in-law, Dewey and Pat Behrens of Meriden IA; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Gary) Snyder of Fergus Falls MN and Laurie Behrens of Sturgis SD; brother-in-law, Keith (Deneise) Behrens of Meriden IA; 3 nieces, 9 nephews, 3 great-nieces, and 4 great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Dean Behrens.
Visitation will be at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. Services will be held at Meredith Drive Reformed Church on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 12:00 pm.

Hi Carol. We didnt get the chance to talk often, but when we did, Tom always had something nice to say and a smile on his face. When I saw my garage door light up at night, I always assumed it was Tom, making a U-turn. :) Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Beth

I am shocked and sad to learn of Tom's passing. He was one of my earliest co-workers in my insurance career and we have kept up on and off over the years. His quick wit and ready smile were infectious - and his stories were often hilarious. My prayers are with all of the family and especially with Carol as you mourn. May God grant you His comfort.

Hard to believe just 6 weeks ago I was having fun with him at our Mitchell reunion. His smile was infectious as was his humor. Had just asked them how he and Carol had met. My heart goes out to all of you

Fun memories of Tom ever since Nora and I attended their wedding.
Always a pleasure listening to his stories, hearing his humor, and getting his insights on politics.
