Charles "Chuck" Dowler
November 10, 2018
Charles Dale Dowler, 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 10th at Taylor House in Des Moines. Charles was born on December 14th, 1936 in Winterset, Iowa. Charles is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Dowler (Young); daughter, Debra (Larry) Covington; son, Daniel Dowler; three grandchildren, Nicholas (Kendra) Covington, Alex (Megan) Covington, Sarah Covington; and two great-grandchildren, Evelynn and Charlie; sister, Ann Newbury; brother, David (Lynn) Dowler; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother John Dowler of Ankeny and his beloved dog Shadow.
Chuck was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, craftsman, mechanic, volunteer fireman, animal lover, and reader. He had a unique ability to fix or create nearly anything he set his mind to. After retiring from 3M as a mechanical engineer in 2000, he found a passion for wood working and excelled at the craft. He was a well-known member of the Des Moines Wood Workers Association. He served as president of the AAW Chapter from January 2007 until 2012. After stepping down, he served as Education and Safety Chairman on the AAW Board. Chuck had an article published in Wood Magazine for his wood working abilities and taught turning to local high school students and club members in his garage on many Wednesdays and Saturdays.
He never missed an event involving his grandchildren or great-grandchildren and was always there to offer a hand or advice to anyone in need. Charles will be dearly remembered by his family and many friends for his sense of humor, storytelling, compassion, and caring. We will carry him in our hearts forever.
Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Des Moines Wood Turners in loving memory of Chuck.
