Service Details
Robert S. Thornton Jr., 48, of Des Moines passed away Wednesday at home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Santiago United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW; burial will take place in Franklin Cemetery.
Robert was born September 18, 1959 in Des Moines. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, football and baseball. Robert was very competitive in everything he did. He was a very loving son and uncle.
Robert is survived by his mother, Leanna Thornton of Mitchellville; his father, Robert S. (Shirley) Thornton of Rockford, IL; his brother, John (Darla) Thornton of Altoona; his half-brother, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Thornton of Des Moines and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Santiago United Methodist Church in loving memory of Robert.

Having been a friend of Bobby's mother for some forty years I have many fond memories of Bobby and my own son as they grew up. Bobby had many obstacles to overcome but always had a winning smile and never ending friendliness. My heart aches for Leanna and her family at this very difficult time and hope her fond memories can prevail.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob one time on a visit to Des Moines to meet with my cousins (your step-sisters). It was Jessica's birthday and we had a picnic at the park. You were introduced to me as Bob's son who everyone loved. My prayers and blessings are with all the family during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the memories that you hold in your hearts.

From the first day I met my new "little" brother 28 yrs ago we were family. No awkward pauses - we were all introduced, Bobby cracks a joke - breaks the ice and that was the Bobby we all looked forward to seeing at our family gatherings, and we were never disappointed. You were just fun to be around and you knew it!. You left us way too soon Bobby love you.

Uncle Bobby- I will miss his genuine laugh and his quick wit at our family gatherings. He always treated me with kindness and had a wonderful heart. He left us too soon but we are blessed to have had him at all. Let's hope the Steelers pull through for him this year and make him proud! I love you, Bobby. -
