John Craggs
October 23, 2018
John Kingston Craggs, 72, died Tuesday, October 23, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born January 4th, 1946 to Harry and Kathryn Craggs in Springfield, IL. John was devoted to his family, friends, and church.
John was a long time member of the Altoona Christian Church, the Altoona Lions Club, and also served on the Altoona Fire Department. He started his own successful business, DRJ Animal Health, and was very proud of that accomplishment. John loved the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and a Master Gardener. He enjoyed yardwork, his flowers and was blessed to run his own Christmas Tree Farm, “Top of the Pines”. Being a firearms enthusiast, John treasured his afternoons spent with his buddies at the shooting range.
John was very handy. One of his favorite past times was leather crafting, and he found great joy in creating special gifts for his family. He had the “gift of gab” and enjoyed meeting at the truck stop everyday with his buddies at the “Farmer’s Table” where they were lovingly referred to as the “Old Maids”.
Paulette felt incredibly blessed as John was hands down her biggest supporter and fan, always encouraging her to pursue her love of music. Above all else, he treasured his time spent with his family, especially his grandsons.
John is survived by his loving wife, Paulette; daughter, Lorilee (Matt) Mills; grandsons, Garrett and Tyler Mills; brother, Harry (Mary) Craggs; and many other loving relatives and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Altoona Christian Church, 2890 1st Avenue S., Altoona, Iowa, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at Altoona Cemetery following the service.

John was such a joy to my days at Biocide. He was kind of an adoptive father figure. I enjoyed my talks with him and his caring heart was always shining. He will be missed by many, I'm so blessed I got to know him.

As one gets older the opportunity or fortune in finding a mentor becomes less likely. I am fortunate to have been afforded that opportunity. John Craggs. John was my friend, business associate, surrogate big brother and a man I genuinely loved and respected. He was hard working, straight forward, and passionate about his family, his business and his clients. I am a better man for having known John and his lessons and memories will live on as I have embraced those lessons he taught me and have shared with my son and grandson.John, I will miss your physical presence (which was formidable) but I will carry your lessons and memories with me...always.
