John “Jack” Mekus, 61, of Des Moines, passed away on September 4, 2008 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Avon Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2-6 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Jack was born, raised and lived in Des Moines all of his life. He was a remodeling contractor and enjoyed gardening, watching the Chicago Cubs and baking during the holidays for family and friends. He is survived by his wife Connie, his sisters JoAnn (Danny) Mahedy of Des Moines and Pam (Lowell) Kleen of Norwalk as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Evie Mekus. Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Hospice or Mercy Hospice.

Ya know, I was thinking yesterday what I would miss most about Jack. These things came to mind.
1. He had the biggest heart ever. Would do anything for anyone.
2. I will miss him calling Connie "Tillie".
3. I will miss him thinking he was the Bar B Que King.
4. I will miss him bragging about his garden and how he should have entered his veggies at the State Fair.
5. Lastly, and I know this is selfish, but I will so miss the goodies he always made at Christmas. I always knew I didn't have to get things made because Jack was gonna show up with his box of wonderful goodies. My whole family looked forward to that and was always inpressed.
