Service Details

Thomas “Roy” Gunson, 93, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 6th & Keo with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Roy was born November 22, 1914 in Des Moines. He was a lifelong Des Moines resident, graduating from Lincoln High School in January of 1933. He married Nadine Mae Baker in July of 1938. Roy served in the Army during WWII where he served under General Patton in the Third Army. He was part of rescuing three concentration camps.
Roy worked at Meredith’s Publishing, Peggy Ann Candy and the Wright Tree Service where he was a Vice President. He was involved with The Governor’s Wellness Council for issues involving the State of Iowa and the redevelopment of Howe Grade School where he worked on the planning and expansion. Roy enjoyed working with the Special Olympics. He was an avid golfer and spent many of his retirement years at Otter Creek playing golf with his friends.
Roy is survived by his sons, Steven A. (Kandi) Gunson of Des Moines and Michael T. (Melinda) Gunson of Nantucket, MA; grandchildren, Ashley C. Gunson of New York City, NY and Nathan Thomas Gunson of Ames, IA where he is a freshman at Iowa State. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine in June of 1985.
