Andrea Lara Biklen
September 30, 2018
Andrea Lara Biklen, 47, of Des Moines, IA died unexpectedly Sunday morning, September 30, 2018. Andrea was born August 5, 1971 in Des Moines to W. Michael and Marcia A. Biklen. During her lifetime, Andrea lived throughout Iowa including Stuart, Lake Park, Tama, Pella, Indianola and Des Moines. She met David Hanson in 2003, marrying on October 8, 2005. They have one son, Noah Hanson.
Andrea graduated Pella High School, 1989; Simpson College with a B.A. in English and magna cum laude, 1993; and Bemidji State University with an M.A. in English, 1995. She worked at AIB College and most recently served as the Director of the Continuing & Graduate Programs West Des Moines Campus for Simpson College since 2007. Previously, Andrea worked as the academic advisor at Simpson’s Indianola campus and for the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Simpson. Andrea has been an adjunct faculty member in the English Department since 1995.
Andrea’s work at Simpson College impacted the lives of hundreds of adult students by guiding their way to degree completion. In Andrea’s own words from her Simpson College profile: I love my job and I am good at it. I have been a student, faculty, and academic advisor at Simpson College for over 26 years; I have reams of institutional knowledge and I am adept at directing students to needed resources. I am quick to provide direction on the best sequence of classes, remind students with mock sternness of up-coming deadlines, and share my trove of wisdom on how to stay attentive during a four hour accounting class. One spring commencement, one of my adult student advisees “Brandon” proudly escorted his lovely wife across the verdant lawn to meet me, the woman who had consumed so much of her husband’s time and attention over the last three years. As I warmly congratulated him on completing his degree and reached out to shake his wife’s hand, Brandon said, “This is Andrea. She’s my . . . my . . . she’s my Simpson Mom!” “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m your Simpson Bossy Older Sister.”
Along with her work and family, Andrea had many other loves. She enjoyed reading books on the porch, cross stitching, playing hand bells, singing show tunes and hymns. She was loved for her sense of humor, creativity and passion for life. There was never a dull moment when she was around! Andrea cared for friends and family as much as they cared for her. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother. They enjoyed spending time together traveling, going to shows, participating in church activities, and playing games (not Monopoly).
Andrea is survived by her husband, David and son, Noah; her parents, W. Michael and Marcia Biklen, Muscatine, IA; a brother, Bryce and his wife Pam and their two children Zachary and Molly, West Des Moines, IA; her parents-in-law, Don and Geri Hanson, Iowa City, IA; and extended family and friends.
Services will be held at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines with visitation Friday, October 5, from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. and the funeral service on Saturday, October 6, at 10:30 a.m.
Andrea has donated her organs to the Iowa Donor Network, transforming the lives of others.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Camp Wesley Woods, Simpson College, or Immanuel United Methodist Church. Condolences may be shared at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I was so shocked to hear of Andreas passing. She taught my Comp 1 and 2 class over 20 years ago and I always think about her beautiful smile and her distinctive charm. Simpson has lost a great educator. I will not forget all that she taught me and am thankful that I had the opportunity to know her.

Death breaks into our lives with irresistible force, often when we are completely unprepared, and it robs us of those we hold dear. None of us are immune to its ravages. So it is not surprising if we feel at a loss when it comes to coping with death and its aftermath. Maybe you have wondered: is there any hope for our loved ones that have died? John 5:28,29 says "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his (Jesus) voice and come out." So, our dear loved ones will have the opportunity to live again. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I was so sad to hear the news about Andrea. I was a year behind her in high school, but we had some shared activities. I hadn't seen her since working at Camp Wesley Woods, but I enjoyed her friendly, cheerful, funny, and kind personality. Thinking of all her family and loved ones.

Dear Family of Andrea,
Andrea was the source of joy and wisdom for all of us at Simpson who had the pleasure of working with her. The fact that so many referred to her as "Our Andrea" seems to capture well how much she is loved. She leaves with us all a very special piece of her heart in ours that we will carry on with us and be so much better for it.

Andrea Biklen, MA, was a constant source of vibrant, dedicated, informed and compassionate advising at the West Des Moines, Simpson Campus and it is so hard to imagine WDM without her. Andrea was also a terrific team member who could be relied on to work through hectic patches at the beginning of term, or tough patches when responding to floods, planning for accreditations or office moves. As her supervisor for 7 years she will always be in my mind's eye as a positive, reliable, capable, welcoming and wonderful colleague. We hold David and Noah and the whole family in our hearts.

I am so saddened by this news. Andrea was definitely my ground rod when I didn't think I could possibly juggle everything and go to college too. She lite my path with her smile and encouraging words. She didn't sugar coat anything but told me how it would be with a smile and that somehow made it better. My deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and the entire Simpson community. What a great void her passing will leave :(

Andrea was my acafemic advisor and cheerleader when I decided to start college at age 54.
She was also my academic angel, so supportive and caring.
It was a blessing to know her and to work with her. I appreciated her guidance.
What a tragic loss.

Simply cant believe this sad news! Andrea was fun, kind, and knowledgeable, and greatly contributed to my years while attending Simpson. She was my incredibly caring academic adviser, who allowed me to interrupt her life even on Friday evenings so I could complete my LEP. I will miss her, as will Simpson. . .my sympathies to both David and Noah. May God bless all :)

In 2002 as a newly single mom I began my education journey with Andrea at the helm! She guided me each step of the way until finally 7 years later I completed my degree. I would not have been able to do that without her encouragement and guidance! My thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.

A tragic loss to all. Andrea was incredibly skilled at her position as she guided so many of us to our degrees. I've always enjoyed meeting with Andrea; her spunk and joyful personality was infections and always brightened my day.
My prayers to all in the immediate and Simpson family.
