Eugene "Gene" Payne

Eugene Arnold Payne, 88, passed away on September 27, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Eugene (Gene) was born August 14, 1930, in Armstrong, Iowa to Robert and Gladys Payne. He and his wife, Sueanne, spent 46 years on their farm near Runnells before moving to Des Moines and Altoona. He graduated from Utilities Engineering Institute in Chicago, Illinois in 1960, and retired from Merchant’s Transfer & Storage after many years of faithful service. His last few months were spent at Courtyard Estates in Pleasant Hill. He was a member of Altoona Baptist Church. He loved his Lord, his family, the farm, working on cars, tractors, church buses or whatever was in the yard.

Gene is survived by his children, Judy (Steve) Miller, James Payne, Brian (Donna) Price, and John Price; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Eva Jane Jones and Lorus Fillman.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. Burial will follow at Berwick Cemetery.
